I’m having one of those days, so I’ve decided to spread the misery around.
You’d think that as a mother of 4 school-age children, I would welcome Mondays with open arms, but no.
Actually once the kids are in school, the day itself is not too bad, but the bit before the school run is invariably torture.
These are the reasons I hate Monday Mornings.
1/ The kids are always tired because we let them stay up later on Friday and Saturday nights, so they don’t want to go to bed at their normal time on Sunday nights. The resulting complaints and mucking around ensures that they are usually in bed about 30 minutes later on a Sunday night than they are on the previous nights. This is too late.
2/ I am always tired. I rarely sleep well on Sunday nights as everytime I wake up to check the clock, I find myself running through the week’s events, trying to remember who needs to be where, and when. It always takes me an hour or two to get back to sleep. I woke up for the day at half five this morning FFS. This is too early.
3/ Someone always starts the week off with a tantrum about something. About getting up, about who uses which bathroom, whether someone has used the wrong toothbrush or about being the last one downstairs. Apparently, all of these things can be deemed Not Fair. This morning is was DD3′s turn but they all have their moments. This hurts my sleep deprived head.
4/ There is always an item of uniform that we can’t locate, despite checking we had everything clean and ready to go last night. This morning it was socks. According to DD3 someone had come into the house overnight and stolen all her school socks. This is bullsh*t.
5/ There is always a form from school, due ‘today’, to be filled in. Sometimes there is yet another cheque to write. Apparently me asking that everyone empties their bags of everything on a Friday afternoon isn’t enough. It seems I need to physically have to go through the bags myself. This is just another thing I have to do.
6/ There is always a piece of forgotten homework to be done. This usually involves scrabbling around for some obscure item to take into school for ‘a project’ or the completion of a worksheet that is too complex for me to get my brain around at this time of the morning. This results in a refusal to help from me and subsequent tears from the child concerned.
7/ We always seem to run out of one of the holy Trinity of breakfast cereals- Shreddies, Weetabix and Cheerios. And of course the kids want the one we don’t have. This is moderately annoying.
8/ DS never likes what is on the Monday school lunch menu. This means I have to make him a packed lunch. I hate making packed lunches. This doesn’t improve my mood any.
9/ Just as I start everyone getting ready for the school run and get a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel, someone ALWAYS discovers they can’t find their school shoes. This is infuriating.
at which point I usually end up like this
Have a Good Monday everyone!
