The Dog’s Bollocks

Black dog with red coat in the snow

The Puppy is now almost 6 months old.

He’s a rescue dog from Heathlands Animal Sanctuary and came to us at 8 weeks of age, after we lost The Old Boy in the summer. Part of the contract I signed when he came to us, said that we would have him castrated before he was a year old.

He’s been a good pup. He’s always been well behaved in his crate overnight, and now he’s stopped nipping the kids they all get on just fine. Toilet training only took a couple of months and he used to come back most of the time. But recently he’s been more and more reluctant to go back on the lead after a walk, and has got very ‘humpy’ with The Lurcher. She doesn’t appreciate this ‘special’ attention and there has been some dissension in the doggy ranks. It’s been getting worse.

The final nail in the coffin of the Puppy’s testicles is down to timing. The dogs are going to be boarded in the dog walker’s home in a few weeks time, and they prefer the male dogs they look after to be neutered.

So the appointment was made.

I dropped The Puppy off at the surgery yesterday morning. He had been stroppy because I hadn’t fed him and when I got home after the school run, there were the remains of 3 toilet rolls in  the hallway. I had been cross. We are going to have to start shutting the toilet doors when we go out, I think. However I couldn’t help feeling  a little guilty as he was led away to his gonad free fate.

I picked him up around 4pm. He was still a little spaced out and when I got him home it was evident he had the Post Op munchies so I gave him his dinner.  He went into the garden and did the longest wee ever, failing miserably to stand on 3 legs then went back to his bowl, just in case more food materialised.

Finally, he gave up, deigned to come inside and lay down. But every now and again he’d wake up, open his eyes and stare into space, like he’d forgotten something but wasn’t sure what.

I’m pretty sure I know what he’s missing. Tomorrow he will be  up and at ‘em again, but of course he’s going top be on lead exercise only for a week. Trying to occupy a recuperating dog is always a challenge but luckily we’ve been sent a new chew toy from Bonlays that should occupy him for a bit.

  1. Ahh bless him, I remember many years ago now when I had a beautiful black Labrador and we put him in for the snip……..he lay with his back to us for about 3 days LOL and my OH kept saying to him ‘I feel your pain Buddy- she made me do it’!!!!
But yours looks so sorry for himself :)

    • He does, doesn’t he? Today he’s much better. Very bouncy but suffering a bit where he was shaved!
